Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the pancreas no longer produces insulin, which is necessary to maintain blood sugar levels. Type 1 Diabetes is less common than Type 2 Diabetes, and can develop at any age.
There is a genetic link between Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease. They are both autoimmune conditions that share a very similar genetic profile, resulting in a significant overlap in diagnoses. It has been found that over 6% of individuals with Type 1 Diabetes also have Celiac Disease due to this link.
It is highly recommended that individuals diagnosed with either of these immune conditions, also be monitored and tested for symptoms of the other condition. Celiac Disease is often silent in the case of patients with Type 1 diabetes, but it is extremely important to screen for celiac disease on a regular basis as it can contribute to unexplained fluctuation in blood sugars due to malabsorption of nutrients.
