If you have been recently diagnosed with celiac disease or any gluten intolerance, you may be wondering what cookware is safe for you to continue to use in your kitchen. One of our favorite tools in the Nommy kitchen is a cast iron skillet. However, the cast iron skillet is just one of those kitchen tools that could be the cause of cross-contamination.

Cast iron skillets are porous and tend to absorb foods through the seasoning process. If used with gluten, cast iron skillets can harbor gluten and be a risk for cross-contamination. Our recommendation is to replace your cast iron skillet with a new one if your kitchen is now completely gluten free. If you have a split kitchen, it is important to buy a new cast iron skillet and carefully label it to avoid cross contamination. Communicate with roommates and family to make them aware that your labeled cookware is to be used for your gluten free food only.
